Now that you finally have some time to yourself what should you do? Here are three things you can do while taking a break, besides relaxing.

Learn

Here are some great sites that I’ve used to help learn a new skill and keep up with trends.

Write

More developers should be writing content, I love reading tutorials and developer opinion pieces and more people should be contributing their knowledge. To get started here are some tools and sites to help you write.

  • medium.com — Great place to write your thoughts and has a growing developer base
  • Focus Writer — A free editor that makes focusing on writing so much easier with its minimal view
  • Gists — Where you’d write code to embed on a place like Medium
example gist in action

Practice

There’s a few places you can practice your coding and you can compete against others.

  • HackerRank.com — Great platform for practicing your coding and potentially get noticed by a few big companies
  • LeetCode.com — Probably the most popular coding practice websites
  • Replit.com — An online code editor that makes it easy to collaborate with others and run in the browser (Python and JS

It may be tempting to just sit back and relax and granted, you do deserve some downtime, however, keep in mind that as time goes on our skills get rusty. A few days to a week is fine to relax but any longer and I find that my skills start to deteriorate, this is when I start learning, writing, or practicing.

Thank you for reading!

If you enjoyed my thoughts please leave a clap.
